In the spring, prickly pear cacti bloom rich pink flowers. This painting is inspired by the cacti I saw just beginning to bloom in the mid-April on my recent trip to the southern California desert. I enjoyed painting the cacti against a rich blue background, using the blue as a highlight on the cactus, and using simple brushstrokes to paint in the magenta buds.
